MIDNIGHT SNACK
a short film by Samuel Dhooge, Jarne Meersman and Rani Nagels

Concept
Midnight Snack is a 1-minute long 3D animation short film, based on the short story 'Count Dracula', written by Woody Allen in 1971. The original story follows Dracula leaving his castle when it's dark outside, and flying to a house in the nearby town with the intention of feasting on the town baker and his wife. When he arrives at the house however, he finds out through the baker that it isn't actually night time, it's only dark out because a solar eclipse is happening. Scared that the sun will scorch him alive, he quickly hides in a closet. More and more people enter the baker's home, and eventually one of them opens the closet door, thinking that Dracula is playing some sort of joke on them. He then burns to a crisp.
Midnight Snack condenses the story to a simpeler version without dialogue, where Dracula desperately tries to escape the home (of an old woman) once he finds out about the solar eclipse through a poster next to the house. Once outside however, the sunlight catches up with him. The short film is more whimsical compared to the more absurdist tone of the original.
The visual style presents the setting and characters as miniatures, by using a tilt-shift effect. Modeling and animation was done in Autodesk Maya, rendering was done in Unreal Engine 5.
